It requires ten volumes for a comprehensive description. Only a treatise can cover geophysics with such breadth and depth. While many books deal with its subdivisions, no single book can provide an in-depth treatment of each topic. Each volume of this treatise covers one aspect in great detail but the treatise as a whole is unique because it was designed as an integrated series for interdisciplinary science like geophysics. The treatise planned to cover each area from basics to cutting edge so that beginners could learn and advanced researchers have up-to-date thorough exposition. The editors ensured each subject benefited from connections with other areas. Geophysics includes Earth's fluid envelope and near-space environment but this treatise focuses on the solid Earth. Atmosphere, ocean, and plasmasphere are discussed only in relation to their impact on the solid planet. Geophysics is interdisciplinary built on physics mathematics geology astronomy and others. Its roots go back historically but blossomed with advances in measuring Earth's properties and processes last century. Technological advances in lab field instrumentation computing satellite remote sensing drove growth. Plate tectonics mantle convection acceptance enabled understanding of earthquakes volcanoes mountain building all geology at fundamental level. Planetary exploration beginning Apollo missions invigorated geophysics extended its purview beyond Earth. Today, geophysics involves thousands of scientists worldwide identified as great unifying endeavor. Success keys are individual volume editors and contributing authors distinguished group of geophysicists assembled." Ключевые слова: e, r, o
